Biography

Though some will argue about whether Wayne Shorter\'s primary impact on jazz has been as a composer or as a saxophonist, hardly anyone will dispute his overall importance as one of jazz\'s leading figures over a long span of time. Though indebted to a great extent to John Coltrane, with whom he practiced in the mid-\'50s while still an undergraduate, Shorter eventually developed his own more succinct manner on tenor sax, retaining the tough tone quality and intensity and, in later years, adding an element of funk. On soprano, Shorter is almost another player entirely, his lovely tone shining like a light beam, his sensibilities attuned more to lyrical thoughts, his choice of notes becoming more spare as his career unfolded. Shorter\'s influence as a player, stemming mainly from his achievements in the 1960s and \'70s, has been tremendous upon the neo-bop brigade who emerged in the early \'80s, most notably Branford Marsalis. As a composer, he is best known for carefully conceived, complex, long-limbed, endlessly winding tunes, many of which have become jazz standards yet have spawned few imitators.

Shorter started on the clarinet at 16 but switched to tenor sax before entering New York University in 1952. After graduating with a BME in 1956, he played with Horace Silver for a short time until he was drafted into the Army for two years. Once out of the service, he joined Maynard Ferguson\'s band, meeting Ferguson\'s pianist Joe Zawinul in the process. The following year (1959), Shorter joined Art Blakey\'s Jazz Messengers, where he remained until 1963, eventually becoming the band\'s music director. During the Blakey period, Shorter also made his debut on records as a leader, cutting several albums for Chicago\'s Vee-Jay label. After a few prior attempts to hire him away from Blakey, Miles Davis finally convinced Shorter to join his Quintet in September 1964, thus completing the lineup of a group whose biggest impact would leap-frog a generation into the \'80s.

Staying with Miles until 1970, Shorter became at times the band\'s most prolific composer, contributing tunes like \"E.S.P.,\" \"Pinocchio,\" \"Nefertiti,\" \"Sanctuary,\" \"Footprints,\" \"Fall\" and the signature description of Miles, \"Prince of Darkness.\" While playing through Miles\' transition from loose post-bop acoustic jazz into electronic jazz-rock, Shorter also took up the soprano in late 1968, an instrument which turned out to be more suited to riding above the new electronic timbres than the tenor. As a prolific solo artist for Blue Note during this period, Shorter expanded his palette from hard bop almost into the atonal avant-garde, with fascinating excursions into jazz/rock territory toward the turn of the decade.

In November 1970, Shorter teamed up with old cohort Joe Zawinul and Miroslav Vitous to form Weather Report, where after a fierce start, Shorter\'s playing grew mellower, pithier, more consciously melodic, and gradually more subservient to Zawinul\'s concepts. By now, he was playing mostly on soprano, though the tenor would re-emerge more toward the end of WR\'s run. Shorter\'s solo ambitions were mostly on hold during the WR days, resulting in but one atypical solo album, Native Dancer, an attractive side trip into Brazilian-American tropicalismo in tandem with Milton Nascimento. Shorter also revisited the past in the late \'70s by touring with Freddie Hubbard and ex-Miles sidemen Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams as V.S.O.P.

Shorter finally left Weather Report in 1985, but promptly went into a creative slump. Still committed to electronics and fusion, his recorded compositions from this point became more predictable and labored, saddled with leaden rhythm sections and overly complicated arrangements. After three routine Columbia albums during 1986-1988, and a tour with Santana, he lapsed into silence, finally emerging in 1992 with Wallace Roney and the V.S.O.P. rhythm section in the \"A Tribute to Miles\" band. In 1994, now on Verve, Shorter released High Life, a somewhat more engaging collaboration with keyboardist Rachel Z.

In concert, he has fielded an erratic series of bands, which could be incoherent one year (1995), and lean and fit the next (1996). He guested on the Rolling Stones\' Bridges to Babylon in 1997, and on Herbie Hancock\'s Gershwin\'s World in 1998. In 2001, he was back with Hancock for Future 2 Future and on Marcus Miller\'s M

Sufjan Stevens - The BQE (2009) [FLAC] {with DVD5 NTSC}

----------- User Comment -----------

It does not get ANY easier than this. Just drag & drop your FLAC files to this program and it converts them to Wav in the same folder. It goes the other way, too! Drag & drop Wav files and it produces FLAC files for you. 2009 sophomore release from the Minnesota-based Electro-Rock outfit AKA singer/songwriter Adam Young. While his music continues to win followers all over the world, Adam does indeed hide behind his music, not going by his real name (See: Badly Drawn Boy and Dashboard Confessional); but going by the moniker Owl City.

Loaded with amazing loops, catchy pickups, and lyrics that soothe the mind and touch the heart, Adam Young has once again created a lush listening experience. Owl City\'s trademark desire to escape in dreams, oceans and sky abound on songs such as \'Cave In\' and \'Umbrella Beach.\' With glorious vocal harmonies and touching odes to love lost, Adam has dug more deeply on Ocean Eyes, lyrically and musically, than ever.

(JazzPlanet) Wayne Shorter - Speak No Evil {RVG Edition}(Ea...

----------- User Comment -----------

It\'s hard to overstate the significance of what the Bee Gees accomplished in the 50 years since brothers Barry, Robin and the late Maurice Gibb began calling themselves the Bee Gees. To celebrate the Bee Gees\' golden anniversary, Reprise honors the singing siblings with The Ultimate Bee Gees a very special career retrospective release. The 2CD set features many hits and chart-topping singles, plus performances of a selection of hit songs they wrote for others.

The Ultimate Bee Gees is a must. Even if you have all of the old albums, the updates in sound from the original CD/album/tape releases is worth picking it up. For those of you who didn\'t grow up with their songs ever-present on the radio, this is what quality pop songwriting sounds like. Even if you\'re not a fan of their style, the composition and execution of these songs speaks of a brilliance that only comes along once or twice in a generation.

Fleetwood Mac-The Very Best Of Fleetwood Mac-2009-FLAC,Logs...

----------- User Comment -----------

Spanning 22 years, this double-disc, 36-track compilation chronicles the initially unlikely and ultimately triumphant conflation of a failing, veteran English neo-blues band (Mick Fleetwood and the McVies) with a pair of mercurial American also-rans (the baroque folk-rock genius Lindsey Buckingham and crypto-songbird Stevie Nicks).

The creative alchemy was immediate, as 15 epochal tracks (\"Dreams,\" \"Say You Love Me,\" \"The Chain,\" \"Don\'t Stop\") from Fleetwood Mac and Rumours here attest. They could have arguably repeated that mega-successful formula for a decade, but chose a more musically expansive tack, represented \"Sara,\" Think About Me\" and the other core tracks drawn from the ambitious Tusk.

While the band\'s megahit luster faded as the solo careers of Buckingham and Nicks took flight in the \'80s, their power was still apparent in the dusky-bright pop of Christine McVie\'s \"Hold Me\" and \"Little Lies.\" Sequenced with compelling listening rather than chronology in mind, this set also includes the strongest of the Mac\'s latter-day recordings (Nicks\'s \"Paper Doll,\" \"Silver Springs,\" and \"No Questions Asked\"; McVie\'s \"As Long As You Follow\"), as well the Lindsey Buckingham showcases \"Go Insane\" and \"Big Love\" from \'97\'s The Dance.

Giardini di Miro\' - Punk Not Diet! Bio

Pat Metheny was born in Kansas City on August 12, 1954 into a musical family. Starting on trumpet at the age of 8, Metheny switched to guitar at age 12. By the age of 15, he was working regularly with the best jazz musicians in Kansas City, receiving valuable on-the-bandstand experience at an unusually young age. Metheny first burst onto the international jazz scene in 1974. Over the course of his three-year stint with vibraphone great Gary Burton, the young Missouri native already displayed his soon-to-become trademarked playing style, which blended the loose and flexible articulation customarily reserved for horn players with an advanced rhythmic and harmonic sensibility - a way of playing and improvising that was modern in conception but grounded deeply in the jazz tradition of melody, swing, and the blues. With the release of his first album, Bright Size Life (1975), he reinvented the traditional \"jazz guitar\" sound for a new generation of players. Throughout his career, Pat Metheny has continued to re-define the genre by utilizing new technology and constantly working to evolve the improvisational and sonic potential of his instrument.

Metheny\'s versatility is almost nearly without peer on any instrument. Over the years, he has performed with artists as diverse as Steve Reich to Ornette Coleman to Herbie Hancock to Jim Hall to Milton Nascimento to David Bowie. He has been part of a writing team with keyboardist Lyle Mays for more than twenty years - an association that has been compared to the Lennon/McCartney and Ellington/Strayhorn partnerships by critics and listeners alike. Metheny\'s body of work includes compositions for solo guitar, small ensembles, electric and acoustic instruments, large orchestras, and ballet pieces, with settings ranging from modern jazz to rock to classical.

As well as being an accomplished musician, Metheny has also participated in the academic arena as a music educator. At 18, he was the youngest teacher ever at the University of Miami. At 19, he became the youngest teacher ever at the Berklee College of Music, where he also received an honorary doctorate more than twenty years later (1996). He has also taught music workshops all over the world, from the Dutch Royal Conservatory to the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz to clinics in Asia and South America. He has also been a true musical pioneer in the realm of electronic music, and was one of the very first jazz musicians to treat the synthesizer as a serious musical instrument. Years before the invention of MIDI technology, Metheny was using the Synclavier as a composing tool. He also been instrumental in the development of several new kinds of guitars such as the soprano acoustic guitar, the 42-string Pikasso guitar, Ibanez\'s PM-100 jazz guitar, and a variety of other custom instruments.

It is one thing to attain popularity as a musician, but it is another to receive the kind of acclaim Metheny has garnered from critics and peers. Over the years, Metheny has won countless polls as \"Best Jazz Guitarist\" and awards, including three gold records for (Still Life) Talking, Letter from Home, and Secret Story. He has also won 17 Grammy Awards spread out over a variety of different categories including Best Rock Instrumental, Best Contemporary Jazz Recording, Best Jazz Instrumental Solo, Best Instrumental Composition. The Pat Metheny Group won an unprecedented seven consecutive Grammies for seven consecutive albums. Metheny has spent most of his life on tour, averaging between 120-240 shows a year since 1974. At the time of this writing, he continues to be one of the brightest stars of the jazz community, dedicating time to both his own projects and those of emerging artists and established veterans alike, helping them to reach their audience as well as realizing their own artistic visions.

review

When the Pat Metheny Group released this debut album on ECM in 1978, the musicianship of Pat was already beginning to turn some heads. His previous trio album for ECM in 1976, featuring Jaco Pastoris (bass) and Bob Moses (drums), had forced the world of traditional jazz to take notice of this contemporary sound. There is not a drab track on this album, and Metheny is joined by an entirely new lineup of musicians: Lyle Mays (piano, autoharp, Oberheim synthesizer), Mark Egan (bass), and Dan Gottlieb (drums). The group really brought new life into the genre. The album starts off with \"San Lorenzo\", featuring some wonderful piano solos by Mays that will knock your socks off. \"Phase Dance\" is the most widely recognizable Metheny piece on here, with some great riffs by Pat threading throughout the piece. The track \"Jaco\" is not really very funky as one might expect, since it was a tribute to bassist Jaco Pastorius, but does show off Egan as a great bassist that knows how to groove to an upbeat. \"Aprilwind\" is a brief quiet piece that is fairly straightforward in the delivery department. \"April Joy\" features Pat gracing the guitar in a style we have all grown to love. And finally, \"Lone Jack\", a track that has a bop feel to it. Most of the tracks on this release have gone on to become standards in their own right. This album soldified Metheny\'s place as a gifted composer with an outstanding mastery of his guitar-craft. This is certainly one of the most important contemporary jazz albums ever released

review

For his final Prestige-related session as a sideman, John Coltrane (tenor sax) and Kenny Burrell (guitar) are supported by an all-star cast of Paul Chambers (bass), Jimmy Cobb (drums), and Tommy Flanagan (piano). This short but sweet gathering cut their teeth on two Flanagancompositions, another two lifted from the Great American Songbook, and a Kenny Burrell original. Flanagan\'s tunes open and close the album, with the spirited \"Freight Trane\" getting the platter underway. While not one of Coltrane\'s most assured performances, he chases the groove right into the hands of Burrell. The guitarist spins sonic gold and seems to inspire similar contributions from Chambers\' bowed bass and Coltrane alike. Especially as the participants pass fours (read: four bars) between them at the song\'s conclusion. The Gus Kahn/Ted Fio Rito standard \"I Never Knew\" frolics beneath Burrell\'s nimble fretwork. Once he passes the reigns to Coltrane, the differences in their styles are more readily apparent, with Burrell organically emerging while Coltrane sounds comparatively farther out structurally. Much of the same can likewise be associated to Burrell\'s own \"Lyresto,\" with the two co-leads gracefully trading and incorporating spontaneous ideas. While not as pronounced, the disparity in the way the performance is approached is a study in unifying and complementary contrasts. The delicate \"Why Was I Born\" is one for the ages as Burrell and Coltrane are captured in a once-in-a-lifetime duet. Together they weave an uncanny and revealing sonic tapestry that captures a pure and focused intimacy. This, thanks in part to the complete restraint of the ensemble, who take the proverbial \"pause for the cause\" and sit out. What remains is the best argument for the meeting of these two jazz giants. The performance can likewise be located on the various-artists Original Jazz Classics: The Prestige Sampler (1988) and Playboy Jazz After Dark (2002) and is worth checking out, regardless of where one might find it. In many ways the showpiece of the project is Flanagan\'s nearly quarter-hour \"Big Paul.\" The pianist\'s lengthy intro establishes a laid-back bop-centric melody with his trademark stylish keyboards perfectly balancing Chambers and Cobb\'s rock-solid timekeeping. Coltrane\'s restraint is palpable as he traverses and examines his options with insightful double-time flurries that assert themselves then retreat into the larger extent of his solo. Those interested in charting the saxophonist\'s progression should make specific note of his work here.

[Eac Flac Cue]Bush-Razorblade Suitcase(1996)(SPG UF)[Rock Ci...

----------- User Comment -----------

Biography

Gary Burton (b. January 23, 1943, Anderson, Indiana) is an American jazz vibraphonist.

A true original on the vibraphone, Burton developed a pianistic style of four-mallet technique as an alternative to the usual two-mallets. This approach caused Burton to be heralded as an innovator and his sound and technique are widely imitated. He is also known for pioneering fusion jazz and popularizing the duet format in jazz, as well as being a major figure in jazz education.
Beginning music at six years old, Burton for the most part taught himself to play marimba and vibraphone. He also began studying piano at age sixteen as he finished high school in Princeton, IN (56-60). Burton has cited jazz pianist Bill Evans as a main inspiration for his approach toward the vibraphone.

Burton attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1960-61. He studied with Herb Pomeroy and soon befriended the composer and arranger Michael Gibbs. After establishing his career during the 1960s, he returned to join the staff of Berklee from 1971-2004, serving first as Professor, then Dean and finally as Executive Vice President during his last decade at the college.

Early in his career, at the behest of noted Nashville saxophonist Boots Randolph, Burton moved to Nashville and recorded with several notable Nashville musicians including guitarist Hank Garland, pianist Floyd Cramer and guitarist Chet Atkins.

After touring both the U.S. and Japan with pianist George Shearing in 1963, Burton went on to play with saxophonist Stan Getz from 1964-1966. In 1967 he formed the Gary Burton Quartet along with guitarist Larry Coryell, drummer Roy Haynes, and bassist Steve Swallow. Predating the jazz-rock fusion craze of the 1970s, the group\'s first record, Duster, combined jazz, country and rock and roll elements. However, some of Burton\'s previous albums (notably Tennessee Firebird and Time Machine, both from 1966) had already shown his inclination toward such experimentation with different genres of popular music. After Coryell left the quartet in the late-1960s, Burton hired a number of well-regarded guitarists: Jerry Hahn, David Pritchard, Mick Goodrick, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and most recently Julian Lage, who played guitar in Burton\'s group Next Generation.

After being named Downbeat Magazine\'s Jazzman of the Year in 1968 (the youngest ever to receive the title) and winning his first Grammy award in 1972, Burton began a now 36 year-long collaboration with pianist Chick Corea, recognized for popularizing the format of jazz duet performance. Their half dozen recordings won the pair Grammy awards in years 1979, 1981, 1997, 1999, and most recently in 2009, for \"The New Crystal Silence.\"

Burton has played with a variety of well-known jazz musicians, including Carla Bley, Gato Barbieri, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Steve Lacy, Pat Metheny, Makoto Ozone, Adam Nussbaum, Tiger Okoshi, Stan Getz, Herbie Hancock, B.B. King, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Tommy Smith, Eberhard Weber, Stephane Grappelli and tango legend

FLAC2CD 3.6.3

----------- User Comment -----------

The sax-heavy rock/pop band known as Quarterflash were formed in Portland, Oregon, in 1980. The band was made up of lead singer and saxophonist Rindy Ross, her husband, guitarist Marv Ross, guitarist Jack Charles, keyboardist Rick DiGiallonardo, bassist Rich Gooch and drummer Brian David Willis.

The group was formed by merging two popular Oregon bands, Seafood Mama and Pilot. They originally released the single \"Harden My Heart\" in Spring 1980. It was a big hit on Portland radio stations, and got the band a one-hour TV special, Seafood Mama In Concert, on KOIN on June 5, 1980. \"Harden My Heart\" would later be rerecorded by the band after they renamed themselves Quarterflash. The name came from an Australian slang description of new immigrants as \"one quarter flash and three parts foolish\", which the Rosses found in a book at producer John Boylan\'s house.

Quarterflash signed to Geffen Records and released their self-titled debut album Quarterflash in 1981. It reached #8 on Billboard\'s Top LPs & Tapes list, and sold over a million copies, earning RIAA gold certification on February 5, 1982, and platinum status on June 29, 1982. The album contained the new version of \"Harden My Heart\", which became their biggest single.

It reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 (it also reached the Top 20 in France). Their follow-up single off the album, \"Find Another Fool\", reached #16. A second one-hour Portland television special, Quarterflash In Concert, was broadcast on KOIN on October 22, 1981, and simulcast on KGON. This concert was taped at the Paramount Theatre on October 15, 1981.

Quarterflash released their second album, Take Another Picture, in 1983. It reached #34 in Billboard, and scored the single \"Take Me to Heart\", which reached #14. The group released their final album, Back Into Blue, in 1985. It peaked at #150 in Billboard. The group later disbanded after getting dropped from their record label.

In 1990, Quarterflash reunited, hiring session musicians, including bassist

[LOSSLESS FLAC]Mercury May Howell - The Man from Manhattan [...

----------- User Comment -----------

Biography

Chris Potter (born January 1, 1971) is an American jazz saxophonist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Potter spent most of his childhood in Columbia, South Carolina where his mother taught psychology at the University of South Carolina. He exhibited an early interest in all kinds of music and quickly became a prodigy, mastering several instruments including guitar and piano, and finally gravitating toward the alto and tenor saxophone.

Potter played his first professional jazz gig at age 13 and quickly developed a devoted local following. He attended college in New York City, first at the New School, and later at Manhattan School of Music.

Potter has released a number of albums as leader and has performed and recorded with many leading musicians including Patricia Barber, Kenny Werner, Red Rodney, Marian McPartland, the Mingus Big Band, Paul Motian, Ray Brown, Jim Hall, James Moody, Dave Douglas, Joe Lovano, Wayne Krantz, Mike Mainieri, Steve Swallow, Steely Dan, Dave Holland, Joanne Brackeen, Adam Rogers and many more.

His 1998 CD Vertigo was named one of the year\'s top ten jazz CDs by both Jazziz magazine and The New York Times. He was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo for his work on the Joanne Brackeen recording Pink Elephant Magic. His 2004 CD Lift: Live At The Village Vanguard was named one of the year\'s ten best new jazz recordings by Fred Kaplan of Slate. His 2006 release, Underground, on which he records with an electric, more \"groove\"-based ensemble featuring Craig Taborn on keyboard; Wayne Krantz on guitar; Nate Smith on drums and Adam Rogers, guitar on tracks 6 and 9), was followed closely by the 2007 release \"Follow the Red Line: Live at the Village Vanguard\", featuring Adam Rogers on all six of its tracks. Another Underground group recording was released in 2009, Ultrahang.

Chris lends his talents on 5 songs on the Patricia Barber release \"The Cole Porter Mix.\"

Chris Potter currently lives in New York City with his wife and new baby and performs all over the world with his band Underground.

review

In the tradition of Coltrane, Rollins, Shorter and McLean, Chris Potter is a clearly identifiable voice on an instrument that is as commonplace in jazz as the piano. This saxophonist\'s powerful energy is in high gear on VERTIGO, an album of unbridled enthusiasm as well as maturity and assuredness. His choice of sidemen for this project--Kurt Rosenwinkel (guitar), Scott Colley (bass) and Billy Drummond (drums)--is evidence enough that Potter\'s vision as a leader is first rate. He is also joined by woodwind colleague Joe Lovano on three tracks, for a display of modern saxophone artistry.

As a composer, Potter is extremely imaginative. His penchant for angular melodies and shifting foundations of rhythm is exhibited in the opening \"Shiva\" and the mysterious title track. Potter and his men display impeccable prowess and free creativity on such rousing undertakings as \"Long Walk, Short Pier\" and the bop-ish \"This Will Be,\" both with Lovano. As a change of pace, \"Almost Home\" lends a peaceful bossa/ballad feel to the set. Finally, after Lovano returns for the very expressive \"Modeen\'s Mood,\" Potter leaves us with a rare turn on soprano for the delightful \"Wake Up.\"
